Smooth Scrolling & Font Smoothing Style

Amie

Mac Convert for Life
I went into System Preferences > Appearance and checked the Use Smooth Scrolling box, and I didn't notice a bit of difference. I also set the Font Smoothing Style (same window) for Medium--Best for Flat (LCD) Screens and didn't notice a bit of difference.

Can someone tell me what's going on?

You will notice a difference if you set this on an iBook.
That doesn't make sense. It wouldn't be there as an option if it didn't do anything. It must be there for a reason...

...and I was right. It *is* there for a reason. And it *does* work. I just had to decrease the font size for font smoothing. Now I notice a difference. :)

If you change the font smoothing, you'll only notice a difference when you quit your apps and open them again.

Smooth Scrolling only affects a few apps, like Safari and....uhh....Safari. There are a couple more, but I can't remember what they are.

IMO, it's really a step DOWN from normal scrolling. It just adds extra frames in the middle of jumps, which makes it unresponsive (especially with scroll wheels). And unless you're on the very fastest hardware, it'll probably be choppy, too.

You are absolutely right. I tried it--and did NOT like smooth scrolling at all. So, I turned back off. Who in their right mind would want to use smooth scrolling? Yuck.

(I *do* like the font smoothing feature, though. Makes everything clearer.)

Smooth scrolling, despite it's name, makes scrolling even choppier than it already is... I don't like it at all.
I know! That's really strange. It even says in Help Viewer that "smooth scrolling makes scrolling smoother." It doesn't! Weird...
