Snow Leopard OSX running slow and I'm lost!

I've "Googled" my problem and searched for answers there but all the solutions are over my head!! This Mac is about two months old and has performed wonderfully. Only the last few days has it begun to run slow and there are hints of other problems. Sometimes, the "mouse" will lock and often I have to re-boot to fix that. Little problems with my email, etc - ! I'm a new user (fifteen years on a PC) and am 72 yr old. Love this Mac tho - it has all my old PC's beat all hollow! I'm sure there are built in devices which could detect and report the problem - and probably the solution but I have no clue.
Any quick and easy fixes out there??
Thanks

1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Activity Viewer and see what program is eating up most of the Mac's computer cycles. So older older programs can go haywire sometimes and eat processor cycles.

2. Clean your built up system cache that might be getting out of hand. Download either Yasu or Onyx and run all the cleaning routines. Let the software maintenance program reboot your Mac then upon that reboot manually reboot again to completely rebuild the Mac's startup/shutdown system cache.

See if either of these two steps help, Good Luck.
