software update error?!

I just had a terrible time with a start up error saying something about a master.password not being a directory.....

I mange to fix that with help from the apple help center (there is an article on that! http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106908)

But now that my computers starts "normally" when I try to update my software via softwere update I get an error saying something like:

make sure you have permissions to write to;
/private/tmp/501/temporaryitems/com.apple.softwareupdate

and the the program quits!

can this problem be fix?

Mac Os 10.3.3
G4 800Mhz
1 GB SDRAM
 
Boot from the Panther CD and run Disk Utility -> Repair Permissions.
It wouldn't hurt to "Repair Disk" at the same time.

Booting into the Panther DVD is no more necessary. It is possible to repair the current drive where your panther os is running.
But let me try my obligatory fixing_weird_problems:
setup a new useraccount and check your system. Still the same?

I had a similar problem (with the same error message) last year (and I am the the admin user). It turned out my admin password became corrupted so it would partially work (it would let me log in and start software update but that same error you had would come up half way through the update) . The fix was easy. All I did was change my admin password, restart, log in with with the new password, then go back and change my admin password back to the original. Disk Utility or throwing out preferences were no help.
