Hehe, the Smart is really famous here. It's a luxurious car if you consider the price/weight relation 
However, for european traffic it's the perfect car. And believe it or not, I find it very cute. I know, american cars have to be mighty and big and not 'cute', but I got the feeling I get more of womens attention in the smart but in the M3. The M3 turns me to some kind of macho guy which is actually just appreciated by guys and thus it's not really desired.
However, my girlfriend loves the smart and said: ppl driving the smart must have so much to "offer", that there is no need to show their potency with and in the car.
Such men know what they want and they are no more childish.

And Michael, the amazing thing about the M3 E46 sound compared to the E36 M3 (I was once testdriving a M Z3 which has the same engine): once you kick down (not talking about the automatic kick-down; my M3 has manual gears), you will first hear a very powerful "explosion" and then the engine starts spinning up. And this short "explosion" is what I love.
