Sony HVR-A1U replace built in cam?

I can't stand the webcam in my iMac. I want to be able to move it around. How can I hook up my HVR-A1U to use with iChat or Messenger?

The first link that Satcomer posted is information about how you can connect a firewire video camera to your Mac and use it instead of the built-in iSight for video chats.

The process should be as follows:
1) Connect your Sony to your computer with a Firewire cable
2) Open iChat
3) Open iChat's preferences
4) Change the video source to your external video camera

Does the procedure not work for you? At what point in the process are you experiencing difficulty?

OK I was blind. Sorry about that. However i did follow all the steps but I guess a Sony HDV cam is not recognized by iChat.
