Sound Preference Pane and Balance Control

For some reason my balance control in the Sound Preference Pane goes for a wander whenever it feels like it. I?ll turn my Mac on, open up iTunes and the sound will be strange. I?ll open up the Sound Preference Pane and the balance will not be centered; it?ll either slightly to the left or slightly to the right. I fix it up and quit System Preferences. For the remainder of the time I use my Mac it will stay centered. I have a feeling though that this happens whenever I open up iTunes. Any suggestions?

That's a tough one. I guess I'll start off by asking a couple of questions. Did you install any third party sound controllers..software or hardware? Also, what version of iTunes?

Sorry for so many questions. Lastly, did you do a Software Update install of 10.2.6? If you did, maybe you should consider the Apple 10.2.6 Combo Update. The combo updates seem to give a lot less headaches than the Software Updates. This is just a suggestion. Good luck.

Plus, I forgot to ask if you have tried to Repair Permissions lately? Believe it when I say Reparing Permissions (using Disk Utility) will really help too.

Please let us know if any of the suggestions work. Thanks.

For installing any third party software/hardware: no. I?m running iTunes 4.0.1 (happened ever since 3) and I repair permissions regularly. Any suggestions?

I had the same prob but suddenly it disappeared. Don't know what I did...
Sorry for no help, but maybe I gave you some hope! ;)

But now that I thought a bit more about it:
I think I restored the system once and that fixed the problem (this was not the reason why I restored, as I recall). So, I also reinstalled iTunes.
Maybe you should try to delete iTunes once and install it again. Also make sure you delete files in the Libraries and where else it might have some leftovers.
I know, it's a weird way to solve a problem, but when you are really desperate...

Veljo,

I've been thinking about your problem it may be a corrupted preference file. I'm not sure which preference file controls the system audio though.

It also may be simple fix by zapping your pram. Also, I have noticed that when I use a freeware-donateware program called Cocktail which does a lot of system hacks, it resets all my system settings including sound tweaks. It does it when I use the "delete system cache" part of Cocktail. You might want to try that.

Also, there is a system preference pane file you can install called BetterSound. It has the ability that seems to help the system sound out. You also may want to try that.

These are just guesses on my part. I hope you can find an answer soon.
