Speed advantage of installing RAM in groups of three in "Nehalem" Mac Pros?

I understand that there's a speed advantage to installing RAM in multiples of three DIMMs in Nehalem Mac Pros. But I'm curious as to the magnitude of that speed advantage.

I'm trying to decide whether I should configure my Mac Pro with 6 X 2 Gig DIMMs for a total of 12 Gig, or 8 X 2 Gig DIMMs for a total of 16 Gig. I wonder what the trade-off is with greater amounts of physical RAM (in a 64-bit machine running Snow Leopard) vs. the greater speed of using all three memory channels with DDR3 RAM.
