hi all
running 10.4 (up to date) on g4 all working fine until, power cut yesterday.

restarted ok, login window ok, desktop doesnt build,no icons, just spinning wheel + 'pls reset your clock'.
have tried
resetting the pram, no change
starting from disk, repairing disk and permissions, no change,

what can i do next, i can easily start from and external drive and junk some prefs if someone can tell me which ones.

regards andy

Try to Reset Your PRAM to see if that helps. If it doesn't Search Apple Support for procedures to reset your PMU or SMU (PMU=Power Management group & SMU=Switch Multiplexer Unit) in the machine and hopefully your power supply didn't fry during the power spikes during power loss and return.

If you are able to boot from an external drive, I think your computer is okay, you may have frelled your volume.

Having done that myself recently . . . which comes the horrible question no one wants: "you backed up your data, right?"

If you did, consider a clean reinstall, then reload your account from your Ex-HD. If it is "cloned" you can just go from Ex-HD to your Int-HD.

If you did not--consider doing it in the future--SuperDuper! is a great program--you can try Archive and Install--that creates a fresh new System which you can then update. You can then grab your data, and your computer may even be fine.

If you cannot reboot from the Ex-HD--assuming it has a System Loaded then go back to Satcomer.

thanks for those suggestions guys
but i think its just a matter of startup prefs or something

i can boot up and login, the desktop builds with half the icons then it gets stuck finishing of launching the finder.
