Start-up problem - G4 Flat Pannel Superdrive)

Upon booting my Imac (flat pannel G4, 768mb RAM DVD-R/CD-RW OS 10.3.9), a please restart your machine message appears. I do so and then it reappears. The Imac will happily boot in target disk mode, from or to another machine, but it will not start up on its own. I have stripped it of extra ram and attempted to boot with core components, but this makes no difference.

Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

Many thanks

Have you tried repairing the drive with the Mac OS X Installer CD, or an utility like DiskWarrior?

Did you do anything to the machine (install new hardware/software, restart improperly, etc.) before it started doing this, or did it just start out of nowhere?
