simple question: how can i start up via CD, in order to reinstall OS X, on a non intel G5 when i can't insert the CD prior to powering up?

my computer gives me a gray Mac with a spinning beach ball, and won't start with 's' or 'command s', and unix fsck gives 'this disc cannot be repaired'. so i want to reinstall the OS but i can't insert the disk prior to powering up.

Insert the CD/DVD as quickly as possible after you press the start button while holding down the 'C' key. It will grab the CD fairly quickly, and the fact that you are holding the 'C' key will let the computer know that is looking for the CD operating system.

Why do you want to insert the CD prior to starting up?
  • Power up.
  • Insert the CD.
  • Press [c] to start-up from the CD.

the problem is i can't physically insert the cd on a desktop mac- the flap has to open and the tray slide out before i can put the disk in...

and as to powering up, i can't power up, i just get the gray apple icon screen and nothing else

When you start your PowerMac next, hold the mouse button down. The CD tray will open shortly after the video turns on.
OR, you can open the drive door at any time - just gently slide the door down. While holding that door down, you can insert an unfolded paperclip into the tiny hole underneath the tray. That's a manual eject release. Push the paperclip until the trat begins to open, then simply pull the tray out. Disk in, and push the tray closed. Don't force it, but it will open that way.
Then restart your Mac...

Mla--- Try This-shutdown Computor-get A Large Size Paper Clip And Straighten It Out Partially. Press On The Cd Door To Open-theres A Small Hole In The Middle Below The Tray-stick The Papereclip Into It Slowly And You Will Feel It Press And It Will Open The Tray. You May Have To Grab The Tray W/fingers Or Use Something To Get It Open Further. Put Cd In And Push Closed. Restart W/ "c" Key Down.this Might Get You Up And Going.
