stuffit refuses to open .zip file

I have a .zip file that seems corrupted (that is, stuffit refuses to open it, error code -40)
does anyone a way to unzip the file and/or alternative for stuffit?

The Finder - at least in newer versions - can unzip directly. However: If StuffIt refuses to unzip, this usually means an archive _is_ corrupted.

Try opening a terminal, changing to the directory that the zip is in, and then typing "unzip <filename>". If that doesn't work, the file is definitely corrupt.

i'm no terminal person, i get

-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'

is it "unzip <filename>" including quotes and <> ? need i type the extension?

No, no quotes. Like this:

unzip filename.zip

Where "filename" is the file's name. Yes, you need to type the ".zip" extension.
