Try resetting PRAM as well as NVRAM. People have reported that these two procedures cure the "can't read any media on a SuperDrive" problem.

Restart holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until you hear three chimes.

Reset Open Firmware.
Reboot your computer while holding down Command-Option-O-F. At the prompt, type
reset-nvram and hit the Return key, then type
reset-all and hit the Return key again. Your computer will reboot.
