I just baught a mac mini, but to my sadness, my external usb hard drive was formatted in ntfs. my mac can see the drive. I can read from it, but i cannot write to it. Any way to enable write access on nfts.
Thanks
Well since Microsoft will not sell rights to write NTFS for other file systems (non-Microsoft) like Mac,Unix and Linux. So Apple let loose their file format and a third party developer MediaFour made MacDrive and CrossStrip. This wat you can install MacDrive on your PC and format externals in OS X native format (MacOSExtended) and XP now can read/write to OS X volumes with no sweat.
the best bet for a crossplatform external is FAT32. it loses some of the benefits (Volume fragmenting, Spotlight indexing etc) of the HFS+ file system, but works either or and can be written to both.
OR - install Parallels Desktop. Running WindowsXP - you can drag-n-drop files both directions between HFS+ and NTFS volumes. (But, you need to have Windows running, too ) I'm not convinced this is a good reason for having Windows on a Mac, but it does work.
