System Error when USB Thumb Drive is Inserted

Whenever I insert a USB thumb drive, the screen dims and I get this screen with a power icon in the background with the error message saying:

"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."

But after startup the drive works fine. I'm running 10.4.3 currently, but I've been having this problem since 10.3.x

How do I fix this?

Unplug any third party USB/firewire devices first. Then reset your PRAM. This should help.
