Te un-montable disk

I have a dual 533Mhz G4 running osx 10.1.3 and since the update have been noticing a few issues.

Most of those issues have been talked about on other threads or boards, so I won't bother you with them. But one issue, that seems to have effected me, since the update, is the increasing amount of error messages when I try to unmount a removable disk (such as a CD-ROM).

I can never seem to just eject a disk anymore without the os decaliring that the disk is in use... even after quitting every open app and logging out and back in, sometimes the disk is still in use.

That problem is also joined with the misterious Volume 71 CD-R disk image. (insert scary noise here).

A have a CD-R drive, which came with the system. And as the case with most people with CD-R's, I burn backups of my drive to CD. I have been burning cd's for a long time, I am currently up to volume 110... I was no where near volume 71 when I upgraded... (more like Volume 103) but for some reason, whenever I'm in a file browser up pops Volume 71 of my backup cds. I can browse it and everything. I have not tried to pull a file from it yet, but I cannot seem to get ride of it. This volume was NOT there before my upgrade, I'm 100% sure of it.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on with my system? I really have not tried anything other then a fresh restart, because I wanted to see if this is happening with anyone else.

Have you tried running a disk utility on the CD-R? It's won't repair it, of course, but it may tell you if there's filesystem problems or other problems with the disk -- if that's the case, you can try to copy everything off the CD-R and burn a new CD-R in hopes that the new one won't exhibit the same problems.

Also, have you tried making an exact copy of the CD? Perhaps there are scratches or imperfections on the readable side of the CD-R that are causing problems with the drive.

Volume 71 has not been in my machine since I burned it. I cannot remember if I had problems when I burned it... but in my mind there was nothing different from Volume 71 from the other 70 volumes before it and the 30+ disks after it.

The disk image appears as if it's mounted, but it has not been mounted since I burned it in osx 10.1.2 a few months ago.

It's simply a problem of getting rid of the reference of Volume 71.

I have not tried a disk utility.. but I will ater I post.. but I'm not sure what that will accomplish.

Thanks for the suggsetion, I'm willing to try anything to get ride of that pesky Volume 71.

:-)

Oh, I think I misunderstood what you were saying, then... so Volume 71 is kinda "stuck" on your desktop, even though the disk isn't inserted in the machine, right?

Try Disk Utility again... this time, highlight the disk that won't go away, and hit Apple-U (Command-U) to "unmount" it. Or, try selecting "Unmount" from the Options menu. See if that works and gives you the same message.

Otherwise, there's gotta be some kind of UNIX command to get rid of it. I just am not up to speed with the UNIX commands yet... ;)

yeah. it's not even mounted on the desktop... it only pops up when I try to file browse from within a program... I noticed it first in classic, but mainly it's annoying when I actually insert a disk and the os says it cannot eject it, which I am assuming is a result of it thinking two disks are in?

I'm not up on my unix commands either, but I figured a restart would do it.

Maybe it somehow got added to your "Favorites" folder under OS 9 or OS X, and when you try to browse it, it's not there (the actual CD) and generates an error...?

nothing I have tried seems to remove this mounted volume...

One item of interest, I looked closer at the icon and I see it looks like the CD-R Icon used for a pre-burned CD.

I notice the CD-R is removed after the cd is burned... so is this some disk image somewhere?

Where does OSX put the disk image it creates before a cd is set to be burned?
