The Spinning Ball - the Mac curse

I've grown to dislike spinning beach ball - if I ever see one at the beach it will ruin my day to be sure. Mine pops ups frequently - especially running some videos and Opera browser. Is this normal to see the spinning ball or should it be only seen occasionally? Frequently it stops and the whole system freezes. The only thing to do is to push the power button and restart the computer losing all unsaved data. What a great OS!
 
Something (like an old or broken application) is eating all of the processor/RAM. Open /Applications/Utilities/Activity Viewer at run that to while doing the Opera thing and see what is eating up your processor.
 
What model Mac do you have?
What version of OS X is installed?
How much memory is installed?
