Thunderbird 3 marks deleted mail as read - why?

I have noticed that Thunderbird 3 marks any mail that is deleted as having been read whether it has been or not. Why? What logical reason could there possibly be for such a setup? How does one prevent that from happening? Is there any setting that can be added to about:config to prevent that?

Using stylesheet code, for Thunderbird 3 email folders, I could find only a method of determining that there were unread messages in them. Is there any way to indicate that a folder contains read messages?

I'm guessing that Thunderbird may be coded to mark mails that you delete as read.
I'm also guessing that you delete an un-read file because you don't need to read it - it's junk, or you are sure of the contents and don't need the email, etc.
So, it's just Thunderbird deciding that you deleted an email because you, in a sense, reviewed (read) that email, and you decided as a result of that review to delete it.
Does that make sense?

No, that does not make sense. If I deleted something by mistake, it would be nice if its status were left alone to make it a bit easier to pick out among the other stuff in there. There is also the problem that the Deleted (Trash) folder does not change its appearance if there are only messages in there that are marked as read. If there were any way to detect a folder containing read messages using a stylesheet it would be a bit better, but I do not know of any way to do that. How does one mark a folder with read messages?

Sorry, I didn't consider that you were deleting anything by mistake. I assumed that you delete files without reading them - as lots of junk mails can be - and were simply wondering why the software automatically changes those to read. What other purpose is there for deleting emails without viewing them first?

Just curious - how many mail folders do you have, and are you using rules to distribute those before you read them?

I have only the default folders in the Local Folders. I do delete junk without reading it. I would like to have a way to stop the application from changing its read/unread status. I would still like to see some difference in the appearance of the Deleted folder if there is anything in it. I have been trying different ways of tackling that problem, and none of them is working.

Here's one work-around...
Make a custom folder for Temporary, or Almost Delete, or Don't Open Yet - or whatever name you want. Instead of deleting your mail, move your likely deletes to that folder. It doesn't solve your need for the folder to display the Unread number in that folder, but at least the status doesn't change, and you can delete those file for good, after you review them - and they don't clutter up your inbox (which is, if I read you correctly, your real need here)

No, I rarely keep emails. I tend to read them and then delete them. The junk mail I mark as junk (if Tbird did not already do that). I then go into the junk folder and delete the junk after checking to make sure that is is all junk. I just wanted to see the status of the Deleted folder so that I know whether I need to empty it or not.
I have now applied a workaround. I replaced the Delete button with the File button. I have to open the list, select Local Folders, and then select the Deleted folder from there, but the unread mail does not get marked as read that way. That means that the Deleted folder label will be bold and have a number after it.
