Mail froze the Mac Mini upon opening, and after the computer was restarted Mail refused to open because "the home directory was too full." The user home directory is using 2 gb of a 40 gb drive. The entire mail folder is less than a1 gig. I tried moving the mail .plist to the desktop and restarting, repairing permissions, and safeboot. No change.

How much empty space do you have on that hard drive?
What is installed there? A lot of big programs?

Half of a 40 gb drive is free. Applications include most of the std. install plus Filemaker, Kaleidagraph, and Endnotes.

I suggest you restart you computer holding down command+s
once the black screen and white text finishes loading type: "fsck -fy" and hit return.
wait for the filesystem check check to complete and note any errors. If you got any, repeat the process.
Then type "exit" and hit return. Your computer will then boot up normally.

Also if your computer is never on at night (12:00-3:00AM), open terminal in /Applications/Utilities and type "sudo sh /etc/daily" and hit return. this will clean up your mail cache among other usefull things.

also 10.4.6 is out now, and installing it may solve your issue.
