Tiger install kills HP 2600n laserjet printer

Well, I installed a brand new HP 2600n laserjet on my G5 iMac running 10.3.7 about a month ago - all was good, it printed through the network ethernet router using a DHCP address, it was cool.

I've just upgraded to tiger and despite everything else being just lovely, here's what it's done to my printer:

I can still see the printer as my default printer.

If I print, it attempts to print it then just trips out and offers a "jobs stopped" message.

I hit restart jobs and retry - it thinks about it and then gives the same "jobs stopped" message.

hmmmm...

I don't know much about bonjour printing, in fact that's a lie, I know nothing, but having skimmed through the forums, I thought I might add the same printer as a bonjour printer and see if using the new protocol might kick it into action - no change - I specified the HP series 6 gimp print driver when asked, something else I picked up from the forum.

Weird fact 1 - the printer utility allows me to print a test page no problem, it's just applications that fail to get anything past it.

Weird fact 2 - I can't reinstall the original HP driver - it just offers me the upgrade option and then says problem with installation try again - which when I do offers the same error message.

To be honest, I'm flummoxed. What hurts most is that the PC in the corner is now used to grab the things I want to print from the network and makes no fuss about it - surely Tiger must be better than this?!

Any clues?

cheers

yes, tried that a couple of times - no avail I'm afraid.

there seem to be quite a few tiger printing issues kicking around don't there?

thanks for the post

It's fixed!!

I again uninstalled the printer from the list and also went to the printers folder in the system library - in the HP folder was a sub folder for this machine (must be the relic of the printer installation I did when I was on 10.3) - I ditched the entire 2600 series folder into the trash.

I then did a printer software re-install - AND this time I did it from the original CD not from a downloaded disk image from HP's site.

I got beyond the previously encountered error message, the printer said it installed ok.

Back to the list of printers and added new printer - this time it found a driver that wasn't from the Tiger HP set, which was named the same as the printer - I selected this and finally it works on all programmes - it shouldn't be like this should it?

In summary - dump previous machine specific folder from the HP section of the printers folder in the system library

Reinstall from OE CD not downloaded .dmg

Select new printer and correct driver.
