Transfering mail from Outlook Express to new computer

I just purchased a imac G5 running Tiger, and I'm trying to figure out how to retrive my mail from my old computer. My old imac is running OS 9.2.2 and I need to retrive email from Outlook Express. I copied my identities folder and loaded it on my new computer. I'm using Apple generic mail and when I got to import from "other" it doesn't recognize my email. Is there anyway to get my email from my old computer to my new one considering the operating systems are different?

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Jennifer

I just went through this with the same problem. I had to import my OE identities (mailboxes etc) into Entourage, then into Mail....

Thanks idesign. Just to clarify..I copy over my identities and such from my old mac and import them into entourage on my new system? Or do I need to import before I transfer? I don't have entourage on my old computer, though.

I moved my entire outlook folder from my old computer onto my new imac. Then opened entourage and imported it. It will ask you to select your identities folder then select whatever mailboxes you wish to import.

Good luck...

New Macs ship with Migration Assistant. This utility handles email migration for you. If you prefer, MacOS X 10's Mail client imports email directly from several email apps, including Outlook Express. With Mail, select File > Import Mailboxes.... Outlook Express is your second choice.

I tried that route, but since I don't have outlook on my new machine and my old machine can't be connected via target mode it wouldn't work. Didn't recognize my folders. Yes, I would actually like to use Mail instead of Entourage.

For whatever reason mail wouldn't recognize my outlook either. Kept telling me there were no Mailboxes to import. OK. Worked like a charm from entourage to mail though....

jemstone528 and idesign,

You have to be specific. The Mac versions of Outlook and Outlook Express are two mutually exclusive applications. If don't use the correct name of your app when you ask for help, you cannot get the correct assistance.

No Problem! My old computer is running 9.2.2 OS and I was using Outlook Express 5.0.2. I want to transfer my emails from Outlook Express to my new MAC running OS 10.4.3 going thru Apple's Mail 2.0.5.

Nope, that's part of MS Office. The mail client shipped with Macs is simply called "Mail".
Bummer. I'm in the same boat as the original poster except I've got nothing except Mail on the Mac mini we're transitioning to. :(

We've got a 512MB USB 2.0 Flash drive. Could we drive the entire Outlook Express folder from our iMac running OS 9.2 and install that on the Mac mini running OS X 10.4? If not, what are our options?

Peace...

Try running Thunderbird. It's great, and it's free. Might allow you to import Outlook properly...
I'm a Thunderbird user and installed TB on the Mac mini I was working on over the weekend.

No dice on the e-mail migration. TB didn't even offer to import from Outlook Express or Entourage (OE isn't installed but Entourage might be since a 30-day trial of MS Office 2004 came on the box) but from Mozilla and Eudora (I believe).

I'm thinking of getting Entourage working and see if TB can import from that (once Entourage is operational). If that doesn't work, we're basically screwed. :(

Peace...

Well, believe it or not the 30-day trial of MS Office that came on the Mac mini reports the trial perid has already expired even though we've had the machine for less than a week. :(

I have a question about the Migration Assistant. If I get a Firewire cable to connect the Mac mini to the iMac, it should be able to import the mail from Outlook Express on the iMac directly into [Apple] Mail, correct?

Peace...

This sucks. :( It looks like the Migration Assistant won't be of assistance since it requires Mac OS X 10.1 or later, according to the FAQ:

Setup/Migration Assistant FAQ said:
Setup Assistant, included with computers that have Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later preinstalled, can transfer data (including account settings and home folders) from a previous Mac (that's using Mac OS X 10.1 or later) to your newer computer. You'll need a FireWire cable to connect the two computers together. The Assistant offers to transfer (or "migrate") data from your older computer when you turn on your new computer for the first time. Make sure the older computer's firmware is up-to-date first.
:(

Any other ideas?

Peace...
