trouble sending mail

Hello.

I've recently encountered problems when attempting to send mail through a Telus pop server. I've been getting a drop down menu saying; cannot send message using the server...and the option to "try again later"

Do you think this is a problem with Mac Mail? Or a problem on Telus' end?

Thank you for any insight you can provide.
(I am a low-tech type!)

Lily the problem maybe several different things. First you may have a corrupted preference file for Mail. First is to remember the email ISP settings for SMTP (transmit) and POP(receive). Also try to get the settings from your ISP's settings site. Then mosey over to the folder /Hard Drive/your User name/Library/Preferences/ and delete the file com.apple.mail.plist . This is Apple's Mail preference file. Once this is deleted the settings in Mail will be gone, not the email themselves. Then you have to set up the SMTP and POP settings again.

If this doesn't work, write back. Good Luck.

I'm using Mail 2.0.5 with OS X 10.4.3. Until yesterday, I've had no problems with the Mail program, but for the past 24-hours or so I've not been able to Send mail from this computer. Receipt is no problem. I get the typical message asking if I want to use a different SMTP. I don't. My connection and Sending capabilities on another Mac using the same server work perfectly, using Mail.

Here are things I've tried so far. If there's something I'm missing, please help me understand what it might be and especially how to fix it:

1) Restarted Mail
2) Ran Disk Warrior to rebuild my directory
3) Trashed and replaced my mail preferences file (com.apple.mail.plist). This action left me with the same inability to send.
4) Checked all settings to verify they've not been changed from those which have worked fine for me for many months.
5) Moaned and groaned to anyone inclined to listen.
6) Gave up and sought help!

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Happy New Year!

Hello Winsen,

Sorry you didn't receive a reply to your December post (!!)

My email problem rectified itself on its own...who knows what happened! Maybe mail caught up with a glitch...maybe the ISP provider caught up with Tiger. It is all a mystery to me.

Now the "problem" occurs once in a blue moon. For the most part I've forgotten about it.

One work-around that I used when I had the ongoing problem was to set the check for new mail pref to "every minute'. Sometimes, just before sending, I would use command-shift-N to open the channels, then click send (comm-shift-D) right away.

Hope your problems are over now.

To anyone who reads this while searching for an answer: if you can't send via SMTP, and you're using something other than your ISP's SMTP server, you should check to see whether your ISP has disabled the SMTP port. It often happens that you can't reach your own SMTP server (for instance, mail.mydomainname.com), but the ISP has its own (mail.east.verizon.net) that's the only game in town.

Checking for blocked SMTP port is especially a good first step if you've just connected at a new place -- for instance, in a hotel -- and can't send. It is generally the problem. There are plenty of discussions about it out there.

Thanks Billbaloney, house pianist. I'd heard about blocked ports before but been flummoxed by them. I'll check the link.
