Trying to setup airport express with airtunes

just bought this piece of kit in order to play music from my laptop to my stereo wirelessly

I wandered whether you need to plug in an ethernet cable from the wirelss modem router to the base station, I was hoping this wasn't the case as my laptop and stereo are upstairs but my modem router is downstairs

I presumed that I could just do it all wirelessly without using and ethernet cables, is this not the case?
 
Yes, you can do just that. Simply plug in the AirPort Express station to the power jack in the wall, then plug your stereo into it.

I believe that Apple's AirPort Utility (In /Applications/Utilities/) should find and configure the Express station for you.
 
ive tried doing this

i configure it fine but when i try to do the airport setup assistant it says: -

There was an error communicating with your AirPort card. Please make sure it is installed properly and try the AirPort Setup Assistant again.
