Trying to use Gmail

My parents just got a Mac, and I don't have one. So I can only help them so much until I get one. I just got them a gmail account (someone sent me an invite), and when they tried to use it, they could not sign in.

They got the following message when they tried logging in:

Javascript should be enabled to allow cookies to be set.

Or something to that effect. They checked their settings, and they have Javascript enabled, have it set to only accept cookies from sites they are navigating to, and the pop-up blocker is set to ON.

I'm guessing it is the pop-up blocker that is causing this, as most pop-ups are caused by javascripts (even though safari is set to have javascript enabled).

I do not believe that it is their setting for only enabling cookies to be accepted from sites they are navigating to, as when I used gmail, I received no other cookies, except those from gmail.com. I use Cookie Pal (btw, what is the best cookie manager for Mac's?).

I know that this has nothing to do with the gmail service, and that it applies to all sites that use cookies, but this just happens to be the service that they were using when they had this problem occur.

Any thoughts on this?

I have a gmail account and access it through Safari. I have the pop-up blocker on, Javascript and Java enabled and cookies for 'the originating page only'. It works fine.

Could it be possible that they need the latest version of Java?

It might also sound stupid... but did you do the usual permissions repairs and such?

They are going to try downloading the latest version of Java and see if that helps. However, I would think they would automatically be prompted to do that if it needed to be done, like Flash does.

And thanks for listing your settings. At least you ruled out the fact that it is not the pop-up blocker setting.

Tell them not to download any updates off of the web manually -- a surefire way to tell if you need an update is to select "Software Update" from the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen instead. If updates show up there, you need one. If not, don't worry about it (this applies to OS X [Java, security updates, system updates] and the iApps [iPhoto, iMovie, etc.] only -- it will not update 3rd party software like PhotoShop or GraphicConverter or Microsoft Office).

Also, gmail does not support Internet Explorer on the Mac. Use Safari. And gmail is still a little buggy. When I click to the site, I usually get a loading message but I still have to reload the page manually. After that, it works.
ElDiablo is correct about using SU. Some software can be updated after a Mac has the OS installed.
After installing everything, be sure to go into your Utilities folder and open Disk Utility. Click on Repair Permissions. It'll keep things running smoothly if you do that on a regular basis.

Great. Thanks for the tip. So, Repair Permissions is nothing more than a button that you click on in Disk Utility?

Yep.

Also, I use GMail and i don't have java enabled in Safari. I do have javascript enabled, cookies for sites i navigate to, pop-ups blocked and ads-blocked.

Ohh and just do you know, I always crash Safari when i create a Label in GMail. It gets created, just also crashes Safari. ;)

What's wrong with gmail? I followed Randmans invitation, signed in and whenever I try to log in it says:
Server Error

Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
Those few minutes are over for few hours and still I have probs. Is that just affecting my account or everyones?

I've never seen that. however i did send out an invite this morning and it never got to the person i sent it too. Maybe new accounts have issues? I hope not. Try a different browser. Does that help?

using ie didn't work as well. Text: your browser doesn't meet the requirements. Using safari just redirects me to an empty site with that error message. :(

Warning I don't know if it's true for everyone, but I sent two invites out with Safari and neither arrived at their destination. Using FireFox everything went ok. However I did loose two invites. Be warned Safari may not be able to send invites!!

Also, Zammy-Sam, I'm hearing this issue too. I'll look into it. See if i can't find answers. The two invitees i sent out today can't log in either.
