Turn off powerbook display

I need to turn off my 17" g4 1.67 ghz powerbook display and continue using my external cinema display. The problem is, I can't put the computer to sleep because I have a desktop connected with appletalk and it screws up the internet and what not for the desktop when I put the powerbook to sleep. Is there anyway to shut down the display on the powerbook, open or not open? I am currently just keeping it open and it displays a blue background all day, and I'm starting to think this can't be too good for the display.

Well you could run the PowerBook with the lid close. Here is the Apple Document how to do that.

Or just turn the brightness all the way down until the backlight goes off.
