Unable to detect empty CD-Rs :(

My iMac (700MHz G4) is working otherwise brilliantly, but -for some weeeeird reason- not able to detect empty CD-R or CD-RW disks at all. The drive hums a bit, then remains quiet. No icons available on the screen.

Checking for permissions, this comes up (seems relevant?):

>Determining correct file permissions.
>We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261


Problem is, after the fix, recheck finds the same thing.. What can I do - I _need_ to be able to burn CD's with this..

OS is latest (10.3.3) and all updates are in. No other problems whatsoever.

go to System Preferences -> CDs & DVDs and check what the system should do when you insert a blank CD.

Jeah, that did it.

I don't know if I or some weirdo software had changed that to "do nothing" but "open Finder" makes things work again.. It's sort of a dangerous thing, I wonder why people would like to "do nothing" anyhow.. But I'm out of the TRAP now - THANKS a lot!

Because some of us like to burn CD-Rs with Toast or some 3rd-party software, and hate having to dismiss the "What would you like to do to this CD-R? [Format] [Eject] [Ignore]" dialog every time we put a CD-R in the drive and don't have Toast as the frontmost application.
