Unable to disconnect Airport disk

I had a maxtor 1000gb usb disk connected to my Airport Extreme which I accessed wirelessly from my MBP. I had cause to disconnect the disk from the Airport but now the MBP keeps trying to connect and popping up an annoying window reading

"CONNECTION FAILED
There was an error connecting to the server “Extreme”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.

If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator."

This window pops up every 10 or 15 seconds and is driving me CRAZY.
I have tried 'disconnecting all users' from within the airport utility for the Airport Extreme

I cannot find a way to permanently disconnect this disk. It's that bad that I am seriously considering reinstalling OS X.

First don't panic!!! :D

In OS X rarely will you have to reinstall OS X, unless you were really trying to hack your Mac and messing with System files.

First it keeps trying to mount the disk because at one time YOU TOLD IT to do that. Open System Preferences->Accounts-.Login Items and see if the disk is a login item. Then if an OS x user improperly eject a network disk, to fix just Reset Your PRAM to fix. Then remember always to drag the network disk to the Trash can and it will turn into an eject icon.
