Universal No Symbol at startup after failed 10.4.6 update

I tried to update a G3 Pismo Powerbook with 10.4.6 (already running 10.4.5) and the install failed. Nothing worked after that, so I tried restarting and got the Universal No Symbol where the Apple icon normally is on the grey startup screen, and now the computer won't start at all. I tried connecting via firewire to another computer and was not able to boot from the Pismo hard drive. I did repair the disk permissions with Disk Utility just using the Pismo as an external firewire hard drive, and then I used DiskWarrior and repaired the directories. The computer still won't start and I still get the Universal No Symbol.

Any ideas?

Download the combined updater for 10.4.6
Boot your other system, and start your Pismo connected in firewire mode.
Run the combined updater on the Pismo drive.
If that does not work, you will need to reinstall Tiger, using the Archive and Install option.

I'd repair permissions prior to installing the combo updater again. Use my utility, Mac HelpMate if you wish...
