unknown extension ".plain"

When cleaning/defragmenting my hard drive, I found a few documents with unrecognizable titles that end with an extension (".plain") that I can neither open nor decompress. (Maybe they could be compressed?) I have no idea what they are (text? graphics? charts?) or were they came from. Anyone recognize this kind of doc?

You don't say how large these files are, but unless they might be some book you wrote and don't want to lose, I suspect these are pieces of Windows viruses you probably downloaded on emails--they cannot be opened on a Mac, nor can they do any harm.

When you said you can't open them, what programs did you try and open them in?
