Updating RAM in Mac Pro

I updated my ram from 1x2GB ram to 2 x 2GB RAM or another brand than what came with my apple... my friend told me that since I bought a different brand that I can't mix the two brands. so that would mean that my old macpro RAM is useless to me... is this true?

Your "friend" is wrong. As long as the Ram is in Mac Pro spec and you install it correctly, it will work together.

actually just put the RAM that came with the computer back in and its not registering on the computer... is there something i missed?

You MUST spread the RAM across the two RAM board correctly. Consult Apple's documentation for the rules on how to install RAM in your Mac Pro.
