Upgrading hard disk

I'm trying to upgrade the hard disk of a 14" G3 iBook. Anyone know of any sites that describe the process? After Googling, I've found the following site, but I think it only deals with 12" iBooks, or are the 14" iBooks similar in design, but just larger?

Failing that, what's the best place to get it done? I'm living in the UK, more specifically the Oxford area but I'm willing to go to London to get it done. I've checked out Micro Anvica on Totenham Court road, and they charge a whopping £80 to install the hard disk.

First all you should see what others experiences have been upgrading the same machine. I use Accelerate Your Mac and their IDE search lasso and just match up my computer specs to it when I want to upgrade my Mac.

Then, just use Google to find the brand drive you want to use and to see if a local store carries the part . Also, I use Other World Computing. When I was in the service, they did ship to overseas locations and they have decent prices.

Great. Thanks bobw, I'm downloading it now. Let's see if I'm able to install this spanking 7200 RPM notebook hard drive.

Whoa..... that looks really really complicated. I think I'll get professionals to do it, since I don't want to risk damaging anything.

In case anyone is interested, I've found people willing to do it. These guys (Mac Faction http://www.macfaction.co.uk) seem alright enough. Will give them a call on Monday.

Yep, the innards of the iBooks are damn near impossible to get at, and if you manage to do get at them, it's damn near impossible to put it all back together again!

I finally bit the bullet and decided to perform the upgrade myself. 5 hours later, I've got the hard disk, all my software and data installed on a new spanking 7200 RPM hard drive.

A rewarding experience, but definitely not for those who are faint of heart :)

Shaved off about 8 seconds from the boot up time. Now it boots in well under half a minute, which is nice. First time launches of applications are noticably faster. In XBench, Reading and writing is about 33% faster.

Not too shabby, I would think. The only slight disadvantage is that the left palm rest feels slightly warmer now. But that could be due to the fact that its currently unseasonably hot where I'm at.

Now, shouldn't that solve your problem in the other thread about the bad temp threshold? Your system temp is higher now.. ;)
How is the noise? And how much is the battery suffering under those 3000rpms more?

Battery life and noise is pretty much the same.

The temp threshold is still a problem, since I think the new hard drive pushes the laptop near the threshold, hence I get the 1 second fan spins, which is a little annoying.
