Urgent: Can't log onto Macbook; profile not appearing.

My roommate shut down his laptop, and the next time he turned it on, his profile simply wasn't there to sign on. The only profile available is listed as "Other...". Any ideas as to what could have caused this or how he can fix it? It's pretty important that he be able to get on his computer again today since he needs files from his hard drive, etc. for doing his work. Any ideas are appreciated.

Edit: He says he's on the latest update of Leopard.

I am going to regret this hints because kids these days can't look up info staring at them in the face. Did you try the hints in the post [HOWTO] Reset User Password via single user mode.

No, I didn't, because that's not the solution to my problem, but thanks for the smugness anyways. Kids these days.

Sorry for trying some humor.

Then use the OS X Leopard install disk and then boot with it. Once the install first comes up you can use the menu item pull downs and select "Disk Utility" to see if it can repair the disk with OS X on it.
