USB HD keep crashing...

Ok, I have a IDE HD I put into an external USB enclosure, and ever since I been using it with my new Powerbook, it keeps on crashing..Like when I try to backup my 15GB of iTunes music, It crashes about half way. Any ideas? Are USB HD unreliable?
 
Make sure that the drive is straight and level. And it needs vents or places for hot air to get out or it will frequently crash. I would guess that the case has vents.
