usb2 capture devices and osx compatibility? hauppauge DVR usb2

Hi parasew and welcome to the forum.
I don't think your hauppauge will work on the mac (or does it say it is mac compatible?).
Unfortunately I am not familiar with such devices and don't know if this is a useful hint, but google for "eyetv". This is a mac compatible box that has several models which might suit your needs. Good luck!

thanks a lot for your replies --

i know about the external firewire solutions, the good thing about the hauppauge usb2 device is that it has a hardware mpeg-2 compression, which makes it the perfect device if you have to work for DVD production or directly store the digitized stuff on DVDs...
i was wondering if there is any other device which would work on a mac and on windows plus linux?

my main goal is to capture analog data and to convert it to mpeg2 -- i thought it's maybe a bad idea to capture with DV/firewire and convert it to mpeg2 afterwards, not only because of time issues (mpeg2 compression takes very long) but also because of quality issues!
anybody knows more about DV to mpeg2 compression issues?
