Using two different OS

When I want to use two different OS on my mac I need two partitions, right? So how to install the second OS in an own partition?
 
What 2 OSes are you referring to? Both OS X and OS 9 can be on the same partition (but don't have to be on the same one), Systems that shipped from Apple with both X and 9, only have one partition. If you're talking about some form of Linux, then each would have its own partition.
 
From what I have read on these threads, installing both Jag and Panther may not be a good plan, even on separate partitions. Panther seems to try to use system components whereever it finds them, Some Panther components are not compatible with Jag, and vice versa. and can't exist within the same system with complaining. This hopefully will change when Panther is released in a couple of months.
Wait for the release... (If you're a developer, and getting releases now, you know how to deal with test software)
 
For future reference:

To partition your hard drive, you would reinitialize it with something like Disk Utility, and it there will be an option to choose the number and size of partitions you want to make. Then each will show up as a separate volume, as if you had 2 hard drives.

If you do this, be sure to format with HFS+, as OS X doesn't like HFS and UFS is not user-friendly.
