Various applications keep crashing

I'm running on OS X 10.5.8. Earlier today, both Firefox and Safari abruptly crashed for seemingly no reason. I restarted, uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, created a new admin account, and tried repairing disk permissions, but none of that helped. For a while, the browsers ran fine with Flash uninstalled, but now I'm getting the spinning beach ball of death when I visit random pages that don't require Flash. Skype, Microsoft Word, and Pages are all crashing too -- I can't even run those for a few seconds. iTunes works fine, and I haven't checked my other apps. I'm not sure if this is related, but every once in a while, Finder will freeze for a few minutes when I'm trying to move icons around.

Does anyone have advice on what else I can do? Thanks in advance.

From what you posted the particular error is an EXC_BAD_ACCESS error. An EXC_BAD_ACCESS error is usually used when there's an illegal memory access occurring.

Basically, the program is asking to use a piece of RAM that either doesn't exsist or the program isn't allowed to access. There are many possible reasons for this, unfortunately its a rather vague error.

Try creating a new user account and logging into that on start up and see if you have the same problems.

You can also try cleaning the preference folder using a utility like Preferential Treatment. Its free and pretty self explanatory.
 
Hi BreatheCarolina, thanks for the help! Unfortunately, signing into a different account at start up didn't help, and my browsers crash every time I try to go to the link you gave me. Is there another way to download the program?
 
It's time to test your hard drive, booted to your installer DVD. Run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
 
BreatheCarolina -- None of those links worked for me, as they all tried to download from the source. I just found out that I'm no longer able to download anything at all, which I think just started happening today. I tried to go to the link explaining the terminal command but it appears that's another one of the pages my browser won't open. I think I've probably exhausted most of the possible fixes by now... I booked an appointment with the Genius Bar over here, so hopefully they can help me figure out what the problem is.

DeltaMac -- Unfortunately, I'm abroad in London right now, and I don't have any of the installer DVDs with me.
