Video DVD's get ejected straight away

I'm experiencing a problem with Video DVD's. If I insert them, the drive spins up, and there is the normal reading sign, but after maybe 15 to 20 seconds it ejects the DVD.
I can't find any notices about these in /var/log/system.log . Sometimes the DVD's work and sometimes they refuse to get loaded.

Is it possible that my DVD Drive is damaged?
This would be a real pain in the ass, because I have no alternative computer arround.

sounds like you and i are looking for the same answer....interesting, so from what i have found is we need to flash our firmware...im gonna post a forum and see what happens
 
well i may be able to help you out with your issue, i guess that all depends on how old your mac is, if its newish, then yes it would have been caused by a recent firmware update, but if its older then you may have to flash your drive to a region free....i know this all sounds confusing, i know that for sure because to be honest im really suprised that i decided to post a thread and you had just posted yours, i posted mine here http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-s...hing-matshita-dvd-r-uj-825-a.html#post1475182 so im really hoping someone can help me out, if i put a DL disc in it acts like its reading it for about 25 seconds and then spits it back out, im in desperate need of help.

yep so as far as i know, there is no way that its your drive, it has to be the firmware that your using, do you know if the software update has brought anything that sounds somewhat like that? also i know that the macbooks from 08 come with leopard, what version do you have? i heard that 10.5 has some problems, but if your like me and have updated to 10.5.7 then you should be in the clear, idk this is really confusing and frustrating deal, i just want to get my shit figured out lol, did you get apple care? if so and no one can help you out, then they will cover the repair, it wouldnt make sense that your pretty much brand new macbook wouldnt be compatible with DVD's. its not even possible, so your having somekind of firmware issue, it reads and writes cd's no problem right? have you tried restarting your computer? how about resetting your PRAM? i hope that im being of some sort of help

Yes, recently i did some SMC Firmware update that came through Software update. I don't have apple care, but something pretty similar offered by my apple dealer. So I'd still have some waranty. But I can't realy live with no computer for a while, so it is not realy a option for me to hand in my notebook to my apple vendor.

Yes my MBP runs Leopard and it is quite new.... ;-)

But I have no Idea where else I could get any firmware updates or so to get this thing straight.
It is right. CD's are read with no problem. It is only a DVD problem.

Well im jealous lol. Okay so i think i may have solved your problem... Its call a Pram reset, idk if you have ever heard of it, but i would try it, it wont harm your computer what so ever, quoted from the apple website you can also google PRAM reset, Okay so turn your computer off, and press command (apple key) option and P and R then press the power button, hold the keys until your computer restarts and you hear the chime sound again, then release the keys and boot up, i guess try a dvd and see if it fixes it?
 
But now I'm expiriencing trouble again. I suppose it is because of the region setting. I'm ripping sent in TV Clips from TV-Stations from all over the world about our Project, so I cannot define myself for one region. Is there a way to make my MBP's DVD drive region free?

After trying several times and doing the NVRAM Reset several times I could now grab all DVD's except 2. Most of the time I had to reboot with the NVRAM Reset after every single DVD. It is strange like this, and remembers me on some bad old days in the past when I was using windows 95 or 98.

It seems to me that this is no region problem. I suppose my DVD drive would not spit out the dvd after a while of trying to mount it, it would just simply refuse to play the dvd.

Thanks for all help and I hope that I get these two last missing DVD's ripped as well.
