videocard

i thought that my 2nd monitor was broken, turns out that it is the video-card of my PB G4 (667)..

if i hook up a flatpanel nothing happens, although the computer recognizes it, and expands the desktop,
if i hook up a CRT monitor all i get is flashing colored stripes..

is this videocard completely broken?

the build in lcd still works perfectly

Has external video ever worked on your PB? Maybe it's just your video adapter. Do you know someone who has a PB G4 that you could borrow just the adapter? You might be able to get a quick test at any Apple Store, or other Apple repair center.

yes i worked great until today

and i don't need an adapter, as i have the older PB G4 667, with a regular VGA - port..
so i guess the card's really gone

i am (un)pluging external monitors/beamers a lot, so i probably too much

thanks anyway

ok.

sorry for bothering you guys/girls with this... just a restart solved the problem.
i didn't try that as i was rendering a big movie in the background

i guess (half of) the video card just crashed or something.
Can they?

You might have gotten interference from something, whether an external source or your rendering.

arri, did you recently update the computer with one of these: Security Update from 7/14, Security Update from 8/14, or the Java update?

I just installed all three of those yesterday, and when I restarted, my monitor had that problem. Big stripes up and down it, and the part that didn't have the stripes was corrupted. Note that I have a desktop G4, so I didn't have the option of looking at the built in screen. ;)

Luckily, it didn't affect the console, so when I hit the login panel, I logged into the console and restarted from there. I was very happy when I saw the screen coming back to normal after the reboot.

i probably had the security updates,
not the java update yet.

and i never poweroff for (dis)connecting monitors..
the Detect monitors option in the monitors-menu suggests to me that that isn't a problem
