Weird folder alias

Hi

This is the second time in as many months that this has happened and, after the first time i had to download/collect all the data i lost.

I just purchased a new external 500gb drive to replace my old one that failed. Its only a week old and its starting to go down the same road as the other. I plugged it in today to watch something and one of the folders has come up with error code -43, says its an alias and is showing ZERO KB of data. I only accessed the drive about an hour before that to copy some data across to it. I take the utmost care with my drives and i only ever use them on mac formatted PCs.

I've tried repairing it with disk utility with no luck.

Any ideas for some quick fixes or should i just cut my losses and backup the remaining date and start again?

Thanks in advance.

You said that you had no luck with Disk Utility...
Do you mean that Disk Utility found an error that it couldn't repair?
Or, did Disk Utility find no problems?

Do you have that external hard drive formatted as MacOS Extended?

When you disconnect the drive from your Mac, do you drag the disk's icon to the trash and wait for the icon to disappear before disconnecting, or do you simply unplug the drive (without "unmounting" the drive first) when you're finished?

You can't do too much with a non-repairable error on a fat32 format drive.
Backup your data, if you need to - then reformat that hard drive with your Disk Utility as MacOS Extended format.
