Western Digital Harddrive

WD drives are probably the noisiest on the market, though. Just a warning ;)

Ok, would this be the case for all drives that just say PC compatible? There is another deal on a Seagate drive from CompUSA. I might go that route instead.

OK, so think I am going to go with the seagate drive. Next question....I install the new drive and I have a copy of Panther I want to install. Can i just install Panther on the new drive and keep jaguar on the old drive for backup and transfer files over at my leisure? Just switching start up disks whenever I want to use Panther or Jaguar as the operating system? Will the 2 systems conflict with each other? Since one is designated as the start up drive I believe it shouldnt matter how many system folders I have as long as they are on a seperate drive. Is this true?

The reason a lot of stores like BestBuy and CompUSA and the like list only "PC compatibility" is because those drives they sell come with formatting/diagnostic utilities on either a CD or a floppy that work only with Windows PCs. They don't come with Macintosh formatting/diagnostic utilities.

The drive will work in your machine, as the others have said here. I have four Western Digital drives in my G4 tower and they work flawlessly. I've even got a 10GB and a 20GB that have been in there since 1999 and they're still humming along today, and I leave my computer on 24/7.

Yes, the 7200RPM Western Digital drives I have are a bit noisy. They "whine" a lot. Not distracting, but you won't have a silent computing experience with them. Doesn't matter a whole lot to me since I can't hear that well to begin with, but it may bother those who are seeking silence.

Same experience with WD hard-drives, they are dependable, my makes a spinning down noise. Not a big deal for me. My whole G4 is loud LOL!!!

Ok, So if WD are noisy, any one know of a decent brand that is queit? how are maxtor? or IBM/Hitachi??

Well, the IBM in my iBook is really quiet, if that helps. On the other hand, the IBM (I think it's an IBM) in our old iMac DV sounds like a chainsaw, so I expect it depends on the model as much as the manufacturer.

I have three drives in my G4, two Maxtors and one Quantum, and you can barely hear the machine.

Both of my Maxtors are quiet, the other is the original WD, and that damn noisy thing is for backups only so it is normally idle till i toss files to it.
