What app is this (screenshot included)?

I'm looking at various multi-track recording apps  and since one of my favourite artists uses it, it gives it at least a little bit more credibility to me...

Yea, most serious audio pros use it. Cubase doesn't support CoreAudio, that automatically makes the whole app suck because you can't use any hardware with it unless it has ASIO drivers for Mac OS X. And most hardware only support CoreAudio on the Mac side because it's the standard, and it's better. I'm really looking forward to get Soundtrack though, or maybe FCP4 if I can get a good student discount on it, so I can start using my box...

FCP4...I'd love that, but I would definately need a hefty discount to be able to afford it :p

Thanks for the heads-up about Cubase, I didn't realise it didn't work with CA...it was one of my alternatives.

And then you've got Deck, which does support multitrack recording, but only monitors the first two channels. I reported it as a bug, and they replied with something like "Yes, we have been aware of that issue for a few months" :D

And yea, I think it's $299 for FCP4 for students. I don't know if it's that simple in Canada or Norway, though

I believe that the Soundtrack is only capable of playing loops! You can't record any audio or midi of your own!! Am I right or is this only a bad nightmare.

Logic is a very "pro" sequencer and it is used by many studios. You should also be aware of the other sequencer products:

ProTools:
http://www.digidesign.com

Digital Performer:
http://www.motu.com

Logic:
http://www.emagic.de

Cubase:
http://www.steinberg.net

ProTools is the sequencer that most studios use. It is PRO. And it surely costs like one. DP, Cubase and Logic are cheaper. Cubase and Logic also have "cut down" versions of their flagships. These versions don't cost much and are very suitable for home use.

Cubase SX (flagship)
Cubase SL (cheaper...)

Logic Platinum (flagship)
Logic Gold (cheap...)
Logic Audio (cheaper...)

;)

You can stll get the Logic Audio Big box for a very reasonable price. You'll probably get the update to 6 for the shipping cost, or some people have had it in the box already.

It's a very good way to get your first step on the Logic ladder, and you get the EXSP24, ES1 and EVP73 bundled in.

Don't bother with Cubase until version 2 comes out. It's not exactly optimized or stable yet.

Yeah, Reason is on my list for other things, but I wanted something that's specifically designed to record audio lines, and not just sample them.

I stil haven't investigated all of SoundTrack's potential yet, but here's what I think is correct:

SoundTrack can record but I don't think there is any MIDI functionality whatsoever. Also, I don't know if you can record from external sequencers like CuBase and I sure as hell don't think you can sync to external sequencers.

As for Deck, it's a good app. I've been using it for like eight years now. Poor man's Pro Tools. I've never had the luxury of recording multiple channels at once (beyond two), so I never missed that bug.

I've been using CuBase for a couple of years and find it very annoying at times. SX is quite nice overall, but the low VST quality is getting old, especially now that I've compared it to SoundTrack's Audio Units plugins, which destroy their VST equivs. I'm very seriously switching to Logic for Audio Units as well as one more Apple app to integrate. I wish they had a cross-grade option, I'd do it in a second.
