What Are "robots" Being On The Site?

Scott or anybody when I check on the main page to see who is logged in at this time it shows robots are logged on. What in the world does that mean?

robot = nonhuman = Computers scanning the site.
Usually they are programed to post on forums to push a product (aka spammers). Some are just scanning for hot topics (like for google).
