What can you find out from an IP?

I am using a DSL connection, and was recently broadcasting some internet radio, so I gave the connection to some people in online forums. The connection address included my IP. What information could they find out from it? Anything dangerous or personal?

it depends on whos looking. if its the FBI, they can find out what you ate for breakfast last thurstday. esentially, somone takes down the ip, and contacts the isp complaints dept. its hard for an induvidual to find out much from an ip other than general geographic location.

well, if you're not careful, and well protected via firewall, etc, anyone could port scan your ip and start trying to hack into your system. put scripts on there to steal your passwords, documents, etc.

i wouldn't give my ip out to anyone I didn't know personally. just asking for trouble IMO.

In that case, anyone know how I could mask my IP or go through some free server for radio broadcasting? I like the idea of having an internet radio station, but it looks like it would be best if I could do it without giving away my IP address.

Just use a firewall and make sure, if you have things like SSH, FTP or ARD active that your passwords are unguessable, and you should be ok.

Make sure you have the latest Software Update updates applied.

Mac OS X isn't vulnerable to things like netbios nuking that you could try with a good margin of success on Windows machines. So, if you have a firewall (the OS X built-in one should do fine) you should be ok.

If you PM me your IP address I can do a scan and tell you what comes up...maybe give you some security advice.

do you have a permanent address or dynamical? DSL mostly comes along with dynamical ips (at least here in europe). For my ip the localization worked scarry fine.

Mine was in the right state, but about 250 miles off. And yes I have a dynamic IP address, Qwest lists my IP as coming out of Phoenix though.
