What happened to those 300,000 60G iPod drives?

For the last two months everyone knows that they have been released and are being hoarded by Apple. So, why weren't they released with the new ipods. Here are 4 Theories

Apple misplaced them.

Either the 60G is going to be released for the HP first in 30 days and HP told Apple we need 500k of these in stock.

or

Apple is saving these for a new!!! product Digital Camera/Motion Camera with a built in 60G drive

or

less likely...Apple is hoardig these at 150k a month at the highest prices toshiba is selling to the public... So that a 60Gig music only player sometime in the future will be released (very unlikely) No, way Apple is savig these bad boys up and will release a 60Gig version in thirty days. I can't see Apple being able to sell 500k at $499 unless it has free porn on it.

Erh... Toshiba themselves have said that those drives won't be available until August, so there's your fifth theory, and probably the right one...

Apple already started taking some delivery in May of test drives. In July they were being mass mass produced so, Apple already has quite a few. Even then, Apple couldn't sell 50,000 60G's a month. At best I see Apple selling 250k mini's a month and 250k other ipods a month at best . That would be a awesome quarter that is like 1.5 million a quarter. Highly unlikely so lets say they sell a million. That would be about 500k for each version. That would probably be something like 35 to 50k of each drive size a month. It's impossible that Apple has not recieved at least that many 60g's in two months even if they weren't mass produced.
This new beast Apple is going to release is going to be different.

July 19 - 12:31 EDT** Greg Joswiak, vice president of hardware product marketing at Apple, has dismissed rumors of 60 gigabyte iPod model, despite Toshiba saying the opposite. "We have no plans in regard to announcing 60 gigabyte models," Joswiak told Reuters. "We are trying to create a much more compelling lineup with two models for 20 and 40 gigabytes at extremely compelling prices."

There we have it... none anytime soon. So, we may see them some time next year. So, again what is apple going to do with all those drives???

Looking more and more like a new product...Then again, Openheimer did mention that we will be seeing some new kinds of products in his last report a week ago.

Toshiba did supply them with the drives, Apple, but they didn't know what product they were going into. In fact maybe the leak of the drives going into the ipods was purposefully done by Apple to get a head start on this new product. Everyone thought it was going to be used in the ipod when in fact it was going into project X. Damn, they pulled the wool over our eyes again.

Wow, you're building speculation based on rumor which was based on speculation which was based on rumor again. And you're upset that it's not true?

Except the quote I see no substantiated theories, facts, or reliable details in any of your statements/arguments. Someone at one point said that they knew a guy that had a source that *confirmed* that Toshiba was sending Apple mass quantities of 60GB drives. We all know how reliable that is...

My friend's girlfriend's sister knows a guy who works at Toshiba who said that mi5moav has 300,000 60GB drives in his garage, where he's working on a giant unfounded speculation machine that can post 2648 rumours per second to macosx.com.

mi5moav... u dont know what ur talkin about as usual, next time be careful on the title of ur thread. thanx :)

No, I'm happy as a lark, what you talking about Cordy?

So, a quote from the man himself saying no handheld will be launched is fact. Have we had a handheld launched in the past 2 years, nope. So, now from the Ipod man himself we have fact no 60GB ipods. So, what is Apple doing with all these 60GB HD's.

If George Buys 500 lbs of uranium and tells everyone that he isn't going to be using them to build a powerplant for public use there is a good chance he is planning on doing something else with them.

So, apple buys a bunch of 60GB drives and we find out they won't be using them in product "A". But bossman "O" say's we have some exciting "new" products coming out in the next few months and they have a bunch of 60GBs in their pants they are going into a new product. Otherwise, Apple wouldn't have ordered them to sit on them thus creating old technology. As soon if not sooner then the product is available to the rest of the world Apple is using it in a product, they are at the cutting edge, especialy when it comes to 1.8" drives. A new product wil be announced utilizing this new drive and it won't be in the ipods. Now if Scott confirms this then I retract my guidance.

LOL!! :) :)

Maybe they're for the new iMacs...... so they can fit a G5 in, but keep a small footprint.

lol. sounds like the rest of the confirmed reports around here.

I haven't seen one shred of evidence that Apple is buying these drives as you claim. Please post a link.

In fact, there hasn't been one link to anything in this thread, so how do you expect us to believe any of it? At least back up your theories with a quote or a link or two.

Im sure in some later months we will have a 60gig ipod, remember when we first got 3g, it was 10, 15, 30, then it was 15, 30, 40, i expect in a couple of months to have something new available.

Perhaps the 60GB drives that Apple purportedly purchased are not going into the iPod. Or, perhaps, the top-of-the-line iPod will be unlike the 20 and 40GB models and sport some other feature.

Or, perhaps we're all buying into a bunch of hooey and we should just wait and find out what's gonna happen and be happy with the lineup Apple is currently offering.

Also: The 60 GB iPod will be great for 'home on iPod', while the smaller ones probably are _too_ small for many users' entire home folders. Maybe Apple wants to make a bigger splash at AppleExpo Paris by announcing both 'home on iPod' and the 60 GB version?

What's really silly is it wouldn't be in Toshiba's best interest to leak apple's proprietary release dates for product. They can say goodbye to their contract with apple if the rumor is true. If it's not, then it is indeed a bunch of hooey. I am going with the latter.

I like Steven LUFC's notion that these drives are for the new iMac. After all, wouldn't that fit with the announced delays both by Apple and Toshiba?

But of course it''s all guess work!

Yep, way to slow for the new imacs. I think those babies only spin at like 4200. I tink a 2.5 could just about fit in any new imac they plan on designing. Plus they are only 60GB heck that we be a step back since the low end imacs have 80GB. The possibiity that these will be used in the HPOD are growing. Even if apple lets HP have a 60GB music player before apple the mark up to them will counter the loss that Apple would have had. So, if you want an ipod with 60GB you'll probably find it at HP before you find it at Apple for a little bit. At 60GB it's also going to be a bit thicker than one we have. If they can't fit 30GB on a single plater this drive is going to have 3 platters that's just insane. Were talking 2G size and weight.
