What is the best freeware/shareware virus protection software for Mac OS X? I am planning to buy Virex. What do u guys think?

Yeah seriously.
The last time I saw a virus for a mac, or personally knew someone who had an infected mac was umm never! And I've worked in 3 technical offices/network centres hehe.

Hah yeah I've got that all set up but I was just curious if you knew if NAV had been updated, prolly has.

Yeah sex-ed :)

I've seen Mac viruses. Actually, I've only even seen 1 Mac virus. It was in 1992. I was running my school's newspaper's production department and one of the macs got infected.

That was it.

Qualified statements:
-If you are very careful with e-mail (disable preview pane, never opening attachments from untrusted/unknown sources)
-If you are very selective of the web pages you visit
-If you are very careful about how you get softwhere and other download sources
-If you don't open up unnecessary ports with the firewall or turn on unnecessary sharing/shell access

...You probably don't need antivirus software. Largely the two biggest antivirus software solutions cause more problems and system instability than it's worth for any added peace of mind. Granted this may change as the OS matures and if it becomes a target, but for now I don't feel that AV softare is necessary on OS X.

How's that? I've had NAV installed for a while and haven't seen any problems or system instability because of it.

I wouldn't touch NAV. I've had such horrible luck with the Utilities and Sys Works...

Besides, they install kext files in your system, which I just don't like.

While articles say there are no known viruses out there for OS X, in a work place like mine where we have Win2K servers and XP boxen, a virus is a virus and can be passed on.

Anyone have a good recommendation for AV? What about Intego VirusBarrier?

Remember, just because it won't affect us doesn't mean we can't pass it on to others.

That's fine that there are no Mac OS X viruses, but it still would be possible to send viruses to PC users.

EX: Get a Word document from a PC user that's got a virus, send it to another. Your fine, but you just spread a virus, correct?

That's what I must solve here.

The number of OS X viruses around is ZERO, eric. There are a few classic OS viruses, a few unix, but no OS X. Yet. And I don't think there is any commercial interest to pay anyone to make those viruses .. how much would MacAfree, Norton or F-Secure pay them?

Now I know that you didn't say that, but it implies there are.

People see that there are no viruses for OS X they think its safe from them, and I don't mean the good well informed folk of these forums.

Complacency is the problem here –_'we don't need an anti-virus program because there are no viruses for OS X'. Lets hope the first one is not a bad one.

Another thought – we should keep quiet about there being no viruses for OS X, it may just give someone some bright ideas.

Now where's my beer. ;)
