What is the best way to use hotmail with iphone and apple mail?

I log into hotmail at work, use iphone when away and use apple mail at home. i want to be able to read emails so that it appears read in my hotmail inbox. ive tried pop3 and it still leaves unread emails. ive also been told imap doesnt work with hotmail
 
Heavens to Murgatroyd! Leaving unread mail on the server has nothing to do with your iPhone. It has nothing to do with the POP3 protocol. It is a bug in Microsoft's crappy mail server. What some unnamed person told you about IMAP support is meaningless. Microsoft does not support IMAP in Hotmail/Live email accounts. Period. It is only now rolling out POP3 support. Lucky for us, it is available in the US.
 
I found the easiest way to access my Hotmail account with a mail application was to get myself a GMail account, then set up GMail to check my Hotmail via POP3 and download all Hotmail emails into my GMail account.

That way, I just check my GMail account and I get both GMails and Hotmails.

Google's GMail site has very specific instructions for setting up your GMail account to check other mail accounts.
