Your iMac (Early 2008) can be upgraded to Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x)
The usual method to get Mountain Lion is from the App Store, which means that you would need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first.
THAT is available from Apple by calling them direct - only $30. Install SL, and update to current version to provide the App Store.
Purchase Mountain, which will automatically install.

You will be much happier with the end result, if you also upgrade your RAM memory with a pair of 2GB sticks to give you 4 GB total memory. You could even install one 4GB, and one 2GB to give you the max on your model of 6GB memory.
