I am about to purchase a New Mac Pro. But I am worried that a new processor upgrade is very soon on the horizon. Are there any concrete leads that would suggest this to be a fact.

If so, how long do you think it will be before we see an upgrade in processor ghz

I don't know of any rumors that there will be an upgrade soon. Personally, I would have thought the next upgrade won't be too soon, as the Mac Pros were updated in April. The high end machine is now "8 core," which really means it's a dual processor Mac, with each (3.0 GHz) Intel "Clovertown" processor having four cores. You can also get dual processor Macs using Intel "Woodcrest" processors, which are dual core rather than quad core, running at 2.0 GHz, 2.66 GHz, or 3.0 GHz.

MacRumors has a Buyer's Guide, which can be quite useful. They speculate about when a product will be upgraded. Right now, they're saying the Mac Pros are worth buying, as they have just been upgraded.

On the other hand, the next WWDC is coming up very soon. While I doubt that they will show new Mac Pros, if you can wait a few days just to be sure, it might be worth it for peace of mind.

Sure, you right in saying that the 8 core is a strong new addition. But I wouldn't class it strictly as an update.

It is more a diagonal side step. It has the Mac Pro label but it's really a different beast.

IMHO Processor speed upgrade seem to ME a logical step for the dual core dual processor Mac Pro's especially after a year, but perhaps that just wishful thinking ;-)

So I can conclude then that there is no avaliable processor on the market that apple could use to upgrade the quad Mac Pro (I mean of course the 2xdual) ?

With the announced dramatic drop in price of the quad processors, I think it's unlikely that Apple will continue with dual-core processors in the MacPro. The next update will probably go all dual 4-core - other than one left-over model at the bottom end with dual-core...

I hear you, but at the moment. the cheapest quad core is 1400 euros more than the mid range dual core mac pro. That it way too big a price difference to contemplate for me.

I would imagine that that is the case for many other pro users 2,66ghz version is for many the most they can pay. The 3,0ghz doesn't justify the price you don't get that much of a bigger bang for your bucks, so i won't fork out 700 more.

IMHO The gap is too big.

The current dual 4-core is only available from Apple, that processor apparently is a special run just for Apple. So, it's more expensive than others in the Intel line. An upcoming change will probably not be a price change, but could upgrade most, or all, of the MacPros to dual 4-core.
As I said - Intel has already announced dramatic price reductions in their 4-core processors (in July, I think). I was just pointing that out... Any processor updates will be unlikely before that time-frame.

In that case, you should continue to wait. My own prediction - mid-August for MacPro processor changes.

Sure, and thanks for the feedback. Another reason to wait is of course Leopard. I tryed asking a couple of apple resellers if they would promise me a free upgrade to leopard if i bought it now. They predicatably said can't do.

So I will just be patient and wait for bigger and for more... np ;-P
