Try this on your machine:
Navigate to an MP3 in column view and start the preview by pressing the QuickTime-style play button.
Now, navigate somewhere else with a new Finder window in list view and try using some of the reveal triangles while the preview is playing.
Or, try to select some icons on the Desktop with the click-and-drag-the-rectangle method.
Strange!
