Why can't I get a secure connection (https)?

Using the latest Mac OS version, an account on my iMac that has Parental Controls turned on (but only restricts time usage and child unfriendly websites) can not access any web mail such as gmail, aol or yahoo mail.

The error message it gets is:

Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server


I don't see any other setting that would prevent a secure setting.

Can anyone help?
