Why can't I install the OS 10.6 on the old Macbook Pro?

I have an old 15" Macbook Pro (OS 10.4.xx) and just bought a new 13" Macbook Pro (OS 10.6). I wanted to use the OS 10.6 disk that came with the new Macbook Pro to upgrade the old one, but it says it cannot be installed.
Is it because the hardware of the old Macbook Pro has limitation for newer software?

Thanks!

Because of two reasons:

1) You cannot use a System Restore DVD with a certain model of Macintosh on any other model of Macintosh, even if they are both "MacBook Pro" models -- they are different models.

2) It's illegal. Mac OS X is a one-license, one-computer piece of software. If you want Mac OS X 10.6 on your old MacBook Pro, you must purchase a copy of Mac OS X 10.6 to install on that computer... for $30. As it stands, you're trying to use a SINGLE Mac OS X 10.6 license to install on TWO computers (the new one which shipped with 10.6, and the old one) -- that's in violation of the EULA (End-User License Agreement) of Mac OS X 10.6.

No, they don't.

Apple offers free "point" upgrades -- that means you can upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.1, 10.4.2, 10.4.3, etc. if you're running Mac OS X 10.4. You cannot upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.1 if you're running Mac OS X 10.3.

Apple offers paid "major" upgrades. That means you have to pay for the upgrade if you're going from Mac OS X 10.3 to Mac OS X 10.4 or similar.

Mac OS X 10.4 to Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 is a paid upgrade. You cannot upgrade for free legally.
